Fun Adventures
Camp MaluhiaBeing a camp counselor for kids who have special needs has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. I remember the day I walked into camp, feeling a mixture of excitement and nervousness. I had never worked with special needs children before, but I was eager to learn and help in any way I could.
The first camper I was assigned to was name Lincoln. Lincoln has high functioning ADHD as well as various food allergies. At first I wasn't sure how to interact with him, but with a bit of patience and trial and understanding, he quickly warmed up to me. Together we did various activities, like a camp wide pirate scavenger hunt, singing by the campfire, flying a helicopter, swimming, and arts and crafts. Throughout the camp I really watched Lincoln open up to not just me but other kids as well. Working with special needs children really taught me a lot about patience, empathy and the importance of celebrating small victories. I learned to see the world through their eyes and appreciate the unique gifts and challenges each individual brings to the table. Most of all I learned that everyone has something to bring to the table, no matter the challenges they may face. At the end of camp I was sad to say goodbye to the campers and my new friends, but I was also filled with a sense of gratitude and joy. I knew that I had made a difference in their lives, and they had certainly made a difference in mine. Being a counselor for special needs kids is not always easy, but it is always meaningful and rewarding, and I am grateful for the opportunity to have been a part of it. |
